In this podcast episode I talk with Beau Martonik. If that name isn’t already familiar to you, Beau is a Pennsylvania native and the founder and host of the East Meets West Hunt Podcast. I had a chance to meet Beau over the summer of 2021, we talked a little hunting, and knew I wanted to hear more from him. Beau is a great whitetail hunter who specializes in big woods and mountain buck tactics. In this Episode we discuss the origins of Beau’s podcast, the importance of physical fitness, adventure hunting, the sacrifices it takes to make hunting a priority in life, tactics for big woods and mountain bucks, trail camera strategies, and a whole lot more. This is a killer episode and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

In today’s episode, we catch up with Clay Burkhart. Clay goes against the grain by hunting with traditional archery equipment on public land in the state of Texas, which is typically known for its rifle hunting and expansive private ranches. I really enjoyed my conversation with Clay and his great sense of humor. This episode highlights the practical simplicity in Clay’s approach, which consists of traditional archery equipment and no nonsense tactics. But don’t let distract you, Clay is certainly paying attention to the details, and his straight forward approach just plain works as evidenced by his results. In a world of gimmick hunting gadgets, we’d all do ourselves a favor by incorporating some of Clay’s get back to basics style this coming season. Final note, Clay and I recorded this podcast way back in early October. Clay had already killed one really nice Texas buck with his recurve and later on in the season he tagged a second, so congrats to Clay on another successful season.

Ryan Glitsky | Rule the Rut | Episode 18 | Going 4 Broke Outdoors Podcast
Sunday Nov 28, 2021
Sunday Nov 28, 2021
In today’s episode, we catch up with Ryan Glitsky. I first learned about Ryan through Instagram where he goes by Moose1720. Ryan spends a lot of time in the field and is passion for hunting whitetails is obvious. A self-described rut hunter, Ryan has an impressive collection of whitetails from his home state of Pennsylvania and from his travels in the Midwest including Ohio and Iowa. In today’s podcast Ryan and I discuss a range of topics including scrape hunting, trail camera placement, morning, evening, and all day sits. We also discuss Ryan’s experiences hunting different types of terrain in Pennsylvania, including farm country and big woods. We also dive into one of Ryan’s bread and butter tactics, which is finding subtle funnels with boots on the ground scouting. I really enjoyed my conversation with Ryan, and I definitely picked up a tip or two to put in the toolbox going forward.

In today’s episode, we catch up with Garrett Prahl. Garrett is the man behind the extremely popular DIY Sportsman YouTube channel and Podcast. In today’s episode Garrett and I discuss why he first started filming and sharing content. We discuss the evolution of his camera gear, what cameras he would recommend for various budgets, and what he currently uses to film his own hunting adventures. The conversation shifts to hunting out of state, Garrett’s lessons learned there and one of the big takeaways is adapting to hunter pressure. We close out the podcast discussing one of Garrett’s latest videos where he discusses the effects of various stabilizer setups on his accuracy. I really enjoyed my conversation with Garrett, and the opportunity to discuss some of these topics and get Garrett’s analytical perspective.
Quick note, we cover a lot of gear related content in this episode, and I’ve included some links to the gear discussed in the podcast description for reference. In today’s episode, we catch up with Adam Miller. Adam Miller is the host of The Bowhunter Chronicles Podcast. In today’s episode Adam and I discuss the origins of our respective podcasts, our personal motivations for hunting, the evolution of Adam’s trail camera strategy, figuring out the optimal time of the year to hunt each of Adam’s hunting locations, the struggles of self-filming, glassing Western terrain, the importance of hunting areas during that areas best time of the year.
Adam is a first class dude. After the podcast, Adam stuck around to answer a lot of my personal questions about podcasting and offered a lot of suggestions to help me improve my podcast. It’s a big part of the reason that 99% of the hunting community is so great, there are a lot of people out there genuinely interested in helping other people and seeing them succeed, so thanks again Adam. If you haven’t already checked out The Bowhunter Chronicles Podcast, give them a listen because they’re putting out great content.

In today’s episode, we catch up with Justin Wright. Justin is a returning guest previously featured on Episode 7. Justin is an incredibly humble guy, and back to share more knowledge about his tactics. Justin has been crushing big public land bucks consistently year after year. In this episode, we focus exclusively on the early season. Justin and I discuss how he makes time to fit deer hunting into his life with an extremely busy schedule, which includes a full-time job, a wife, and a young child and still manages to find consistent success on big deer. We cover the importance of in-season scouting, which is something that Justin seems to really have a gift for and we discuss the subtle clues that can tip Justin off to a big deer’s core area in the early season. We discuss trail camera placement for the early season. We also discuss Justin’s views on the impact of the weather on early season hunts and specifically, Justin has some interesting observations on how humidity impacts his decision to hunt or not. Finally, we discuss Justin’s goals for the upcoming season.

In today’s episode, we catch up with Jake Vollink. You may recognize the name from Jake’s many appearances on Midwest Whitetail’s Great Lakes Regional show. Jake is one of those guys who flies a bit under the radar, but is an absolute killer. Jake has taken several great bucks in his highly pressured home state of Michigan and he has also found consistent success on his archery deer hunts in Wyoming. In today’s podcast, Jake and I discuss his early season tactics in the west, early season tactics in Michigan, lessons learned from filming as a cameraman and as a self-filmer, we discuss social media, haters, and burnout. There are a lot of great takeaways from today’s episode, and I really enjoyed my conversation with Jake. Jake and I actually recorded this podcast about two weeks ago in late August, and since the recording, Jake actually shot a great early season buck in Wyoming, so congrats Jake, awesome buck!

In today’s episode, we catch up with Dan Infalt, a man who needs no introduction. Dan has revolutionized techniques for hunting bedded bucks, mobile hunting tactics, and he has been gracious enough to share his incredible wealth of know with thousands of other hunters via thehuntingbeast forum, which Dan founded. Dan also co-founded hunting beast gear dot com, a company that develops and produces mobile hunting gear specifically designed for mobile hunters. I personally owe nearly all of my bowhunting success since 2014 to the lessons I have learned from Dan and the other members on the hunting beast forum.
In this podcast we discuss early season tactics. Specifically, Dan and I discuss common features of early season bedding areas, if hunting field edges is ever the correct play, early season food sources, hot weather hunting and its effects on buck movement, early season rubs and scrapes and how Dan uses that intel, trail camera strategies, and tactics to attack new terrain or new states during the early season.

I want to start out today’s podcast with an important public service announcement. Today is August 26th, and I have had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with a taxidermist here in Montana for the past 21 months that is possibly the most unethical business person I have ever dealt with. I want to save you guys from ever enduring this experience. The taxidermist’s name is Don Keever, and his taxidermy shop name is Antler’s and Anglers Taxidermy and it’s located at 2905 Grelck Lane in Billings Montana. I would like everyone listening to pull out your phone and enter this phone number (406)855-7655, that’s (406)855-7655 and title the contact in your phone “Do Not Use Ever”. Let me elaborate on the reasons why you as a hunter who values his time and his money should never use Antler’s and Anglers Taxidermy shop. I will try and keep this short, but bear with me.
I dropped off my largest whitetail buck to date in November of 2019 to Antlers and Anglers Taxidermy. This was a 141” deer with a 22” neck. I explicitly stated to Don that turnaround time was an important factor I considered when selecting a taxidermist. Don stated his average turn around time was 12 months. When I pressed him for the absolute worst case scenario, he told me 18 months, absolute worst case scenario, these are his words. I paid Don his requested deposit of $400 on a total price of $595 for the completed mount. The following year in September of 2020, I shot a 10 point whitetail buck. Since 12 months had not elapsed, I took this buck to Don to be mounted as well. In October of 2020, I shot a pronghorn and took that to Don to be mounted as well. I paid Don a $400 deposit for each mount, totaling $1200 for all three mounts.
In November of 2020, 12 months after I initially dropped off the first mount, I called Don for the first time to get a status update on the progress of my deer mount. Don stated that the tannery he used, which he told me is named “The Wildlife Gallery Tannerys” located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan was running behind due to COVID-19 and that it would be 2 to 3 more months before my mount was completed. Fast forward 3 months to February 2021, I called Don for a second time to inquire about progress on my deer mount. Don told me almost verbatim, the same story that the Wildlife Gallery Tannery had not returned 2019 capes yet and that it would be two to three more months. Fast forward to May of 2021, a full 18 months after dropping off the first deer, I called Don for a status update, and he told me, almost verbatim the same story, that it would be 2-3 more months. At this point, Don had exceeded what were in his words his initially promised worst case scenario. I informed him that I would be coming to his shop to pick up my 3 skull plates and my capes. Don stated that my initial whitetail cape from 2019 had finally came back from the tannery. On May 6th, 2021, I travelled to Don’s shop and retrieved my 3 skull plates and one whitetail cape. The cape was labeled number 975, which was my invoice number. My skull plate was also labeled number 975. I took the cape and skull plate to a much more reputable taxidermist. The taxidermist informed me that the cape I received from Don measured only 19” and it was clearly not my original cape. Not once during any of our interactions did Don ever indicate I would not receive my original cape. When I confronted him, he stated that my cape had been damaged by bugs beyond repair at the tannery. Who knows what the truth is, but two facts are certain. First, I did not receive my original cape back. Second, Don only disclosed I received a much smaller replacement cape after I called him out on it.
When I picked up my skull plates and cape, I asked Don for a partial refund because he had done no work on my initial whitetail buck. I brought the cape to him skinned, and I never received that cape back as just mentioned. On my second whitetail buck he had skinned the faces and sent the hides out for tanning. I asked for $600 dollars of my $1200 deposit back, which seemed more than fair to me. Don refused to give me a single cent back. Not only did he try and pass off an inferior cape to me and not complete any of my work, he charged me $1200 to do that!!!
One final point, you might be thinking to yourself “hey maybe the Wildlife Gallery Tannery in Mt. Pleasant Michigan is that far behind.” I want to tell you, they are not. How do I know this you might ask? Because the taxidermist I took my buck to after getting it back from Don uses the exact same tannery. In fact, I shot a whitetail buck in November of 2020 in Kansas. My taxidermist in Michigan received the cape back in April of 2021, only 5 months later. Again, I want to reiterate that today is August 26th, and I have still not received my whitetail or antelope capes back from Don, although he claims my antelope cape has now been delivered to his shop, although I have a hard time believing that is even my cape after what has happened to date. Bottom line, avoid antlers and anglers taxidermy at 2905 Grelck Lane in Billings, MT. Put this number in your phone as “do not ever use” that’s Don Keever at (406)855-7655. I have almost the entire history of events in text message, if anyone would like to see those messages to corroborate this story, please feel free to contact me. Beware Antlers and Anglers Taxidermy and Don Keever.
